& the Elephantmen - We Are Night Sky (2005)Dax Riggs is one of those performers who never lets me down, I pretty much enjoy everything he's done in it's own way. This review is completely biased for that reason, then again all of my reviews are. Some people were let down with the current incarnation of Deadboy and the Elephantmen. The last album was a psychedelic masterpiece. If you go into this album expecting that you will be disappointed. "We Are Night Sky" is an awesome album if you're in the mood for a catchy, stripped down, bluesy, classic rock sound. The band's main draw has always been Dax's voice, this time around he has the help of female back-up vocals. Tessie's vocals do a lot to compliment the songs. There's something extremely captivating about it, it reminds me of The Pixies. None of the music on the album is all that complex, but it doesn't matter. Some songs pick up and rock ("Stop, I'm Already Dead", "Kissed By Lightning"), others are mellow and relaxing ("Evil Friend", "No Rainbow"). My favorite song on the album is "How Long The Night Was", this song sounds like it should be from another time, or another planet, familiar yet different. Then again, that could be said about the entire album. Rush over to the official site and download it while it's still available. The only song i don't really like is "Blood Music", this is mainly because i'd heard a bunch of live versions of it in the past, all of which were nice and mellow, it's turned into a noisy rock song. I don't enjoy it much, though someone new to the song might like it. Boo. All in all, the dark subject matter of the band is still there, Dax's voice is still there. The music will probably appeal to the indie crowd since it's got more blues and "garage-rock" stuff going on. The hardcore fans might stop liking the band. People are comparing and complaining since the band has a male singer/guitarist and a female drummer. I don't listen to that other band, and I'm not going to make the comparison. Go ahead, buy the album, go for a walk at night, take it all in, enjoy.
