Blitzkid - Trace Of A Stranger(2005)
Q: "What exactly is horror punk anyway?"
A:  This album.

Blitzkid recently re-released this album through Horror High, I got it for Christmas, and I've listened to it at least twice a day since then. Given, that was just a couple days ago, but either way this is an album that's hard to take out of your CD player.  Yeah it's obvious they're influenced by The Misfits, but this isn't some cookie cutter imitation.  There's all sorts of experimenting,.
"As the Rope Bridge Swings" is a really haunting song that  has the only unobtrusive use of bagpipes i've ever heard in a punk song.  Take that Dropkick Murphys!   "Love Like Blood" instantly became one of my favorite songs, it's pretty much a broken heart ballad, but it really picks up, great lyrics. There are a couple short fast rocking songs like "Long Dark Hallway" and "She Wolf can't say they're life-changing songs but they keep things interesting especially when leading into a longer song. The last song on the CD is "Slaughter at the Sock Hop" a fun, catchy song that happens to be about someone hacking people up at a high school dance.    It'd be a crime if i  didn't mention the opening track. "Let's Go To The Cemetary"  is one of the most fun, catchy sing-along songs ever. This is pretty much an essential for the genre.
The entire album is woth a listen, i don't feel like writing about every single song on the album and i'm sure you don't want to read about it.  I only have a couple complaints about the album. I'm not sure if it was re-mastered or just re-issued, the recording could stand to be a little more clear. It sounds older than it is, and the volume is lower than almost all of the other CD's I have, this is a minor annoyance. The cover doesn't really do it for me either. I know that Blitzkid like to use old horror movie images for their covers, I have no clue where it's from but Neurosis used an almost identical image for an album. I've had to look up lyrics for a lot of the songs and really, their lyrics are great, the problem is there's no lyrics in the book. That's a total ball-buster right there.
Anyway, not only is this album great, it's also cheap, head over to merchmonster or interpunk and pick it up, it'll be around $10.
