DevilDriver -
The Fury Of Our Maker's Hand (2005)To be honest, I never really gave this band a chance. I saw the singer was Dez from Coal Chamber and spent a while looking at magazine articles saying things like "DevilDriver? what a gay name! look at this fagman here, "Loco", I'm so Goth and crazy and spooky and disturbed". Then I saw them open for GWAR in the fall of '05, after that I said "well, that was pretty cool" and left it at that. Months later, after hearing their sophomore record, I'll admit it, I'm impressed. "End of the Line" starts the album off with an intro that sounds like it could be from some random alternative band, then the song picks up and becomes pissed off and full of thrash. The verses of "Before The Hangman's Noose" still sounds a little rap-rock influenced, but you have to love a chorus like "Before the hangman’s noose, I’ll say, It’s a good day to die... this day, it will be mine". It's a rather uplifting way to face death. I don't feel like reviewing every single song, but it's a safe bet to say that every song is pretty bad-ass, lots of great instrumental parts, pretty catchy lyrics, a bit cliché at points, but catchy nonetheless. This album is fast and heavy, as well as catchy with memorable hooks. Lots of screaming, yet still easy to listen to. The music is at times beautiful and other times completely destructive. I could go for more variety in vocals, maybe that'll happen in later albums. Either way, as hard as it is for me to admit; I like a new metal band. 4 out of 5 skulls Official Site : www.devildriver.com Label - www.roadrunnerrecords.com |
