Green Day - American Idiot (2004)
This album really blew me away, I haven't been too into Green Day for their last
few albums, but then they came out with American Idiot and i was blown
away. This is a great concept album, It kinda sounds like Green Day raped Pink
Floyd in a dark alley, and believe me that's a good thing. I'm going to
review every song on this album because i think it deserves it and it's the
first review on the site. so here ya go:
The album starts out with "American Idiot" easily the low point of the
album, the most political and the most Green Day-sounding song on the
album, not all that bad, It's a basic punk rock song that talks about America
being controlled by this and that, but hey, Billie Joe says "Fuck" and
"Faggot" in it, and i love those words. next song!
"Jesus of Suburbia" is a nine minute long epic song with 5 different
parts, all of which could be different songs but the flow into one another
perfectly, lots of ups and downs, some pretty deep lyrics, some funny lyrics,
some pissed off moments, some downright beautiful parts. just awesome. Next up
is "Holiday", you've probably heard this on the radio, some don't like
it for the politics, I think of it more along the lines of the Pink character in
The Wall, but hey I must be wrong, again... the word "fags" is in this
and that rules. Then along comes "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", nice
song, some say it's overplayed, i say "stop listening to the radio".
"Are We The Waiting" is a nice mellow song that leads into
"St Jimmy" which is a rocking number with a bunch of cool cliche
lyrics.
After that is "Give Me Novacaine" I love this song, lyrics you can
identify with a chorus that picks up and is catchy as fuck, the song ends
suddenly and goes into a cool, fast, generic, punk sounding song called
"She's a Rebel". "Extraordinary Girl" is an okay song,
kinda fits in the story but nothing extraordinary about it, man i'm clever.
"Letterbomb" is freaking baf, one of the best songs on the album. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is a mellow song that's pretty moving
and sad.
"Homecoming" is the second epic song on the album, again it has a ton
of parts, this one even features Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool singing parts of it,
both part's rule. Tre sings the "Rock n Roll Girlfriend" part and it's
nothing short of great, so many ups and downs, various choruses, boy
do i love these nine minute songs.
The album wraps up with "Whatsername", a slower song that depresses
the shit out of me, lines like "i made a point to burn all of the
photographs" seem to get to me, anyone can identify with this song, it's
great, really powerful chorus, and an awesome finish for an album.
I can't believe Green Day pulled off such a great album, to me it's an instant
essential album, it may be a concept album but you can easily identify with damn
near every song on a personal level and it has tons of replay value.
